What is a Sandalwood Scented Candle?
In the massive universe of scents and fragrances, sandalwood is often forgotten and not valued enough. It is a sophisticated scent which complements perfectly with various other scents.
It’s smell can be best described as a ‘woodsy scent’, which makes it seem like you’ve been transported in the middle of a forest on a sunny morning! It can’t get better than this, right?
So, what exactly is Sandalwood?
Sandalwood is a category of tree that falls under the genus Santalum. These trees take a very long time to grow. Finally, the wood that these trees produce are heavy, yellow, fine-grained aromatic wood. And they can retain their scent for decades.
Sandalwood is one of the most expensive woods in the world! Understandably so because sandalwood trees can take up to 15 years or more to be fully grown after they are harvested. Fun fact: the older the tree, the higher the quantity and quality of the oil it produces!
Sandalwood trees originated from Southern India. However, the plant has spread to other countries such as Indonesia, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Hawaii, and Australia.
Finally, sandalwood scented candles are when the sandalwood scent is added to any type of candle wax!
Why Does Soy Wax Make Sandalwood Scented Candles Smell Better?
One of the many magics of soy wax candles is that they carry scent the best. No other candle wax can compare to the way soy wax candles carry fragrances!
This mainly has to do with the fact that soy wax candles are slow burning candles. Consequently, a pool of liquid wax forms around the wick.
From this liquid wax, the fragrance slowly emits into the surroundings! This gradual emission of fragrance makes the sandalwood scent more pronounced!
Process of Making Sandalwood Scented Candles
To make sandalwood candles, begin by melting wax flakes in a pitcher and continuously stir the wax with a wooden spoon to ensure that it melts completely and there are no lumps left in the mixture.
Once the wax is fully melted, remove it from the heat source. At this step, add colouring to get the desired colour. However, this step is optional and you can skip it.
Then, measure the temperature of the wax. As soon as the temperature of the wax is lower than the flashpoint of fragrance oils, add the fragrance. In this case, sandalwood. The measurement for fragrance oils varies with each case, depending on the total amount of wax.
After adding the sandalwood scent, stir the mixture for 5 to 10 minutes to ensure that the fragrance is incorporated properly.
Then, finally, put a wick in each glass jar. The wick is attached to the bottom of the glass jar using a wick tab of premium quality to ensure that the wick is carefully secured. Let the wick be for a bit so the wick tab is hardened.
The last step involves pouring the melted wax into the glass jar. Let the wax cool down for at least 30 minutes. Then, end the process by trimming the wick so that it is only ¼ inch above the surface.
And that is how we prepare to prepare sandalwood candles!
